History
In the fall of 1998 a group of actors, singers, and musicians met with
the
idea
of forming a performing
arts group in the Capital District of upstate
New York devoted to performing the works of gay and lesbian composers.
The group became Three Dollar Bill Productions and in the spring of 1999 presented
a musical revue, “… As A Three Dollar Bill.” Since then Three
Dollar Bill has produced annual versions of that original musical revue, two other original revues, fully-staged musicals by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered composers, readings and staged versions of new plays by community playwrights , and has recorded a CD
for national release. In 2000 Three Dollar Bill became an affiliate organization of the Capital District Gay
and Lesbian Community Council, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization serving
the Capital District’s thriving
and vibrant LGBT community.
Since its inception, Three Dollar Bill has worked to provide a gay-positive atmosphere for musical and theatrical artists in the community and to help the community reclaim its history through live theater and
music. In 2008 we recorded a second CD and presented the world premiere of a new play with productions
in Albany
as well as New York City.
In 2009 we will work with Capital District playwright, Michael John Meade, to develop his new play about Abraham Lincoln, The Shadows of Springfield.
Three Dollar Bill Productions is now Queer Theater, a name change to reflect a more inclusive and outreaching mission. |
